Nia takes inspiration from Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, jazz dance, modern dance, Duncan dance, yoga, Alexander Technique and Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. Every session engages every muscle in your body and even your mind with a unique combination of each dance style. Thanks to the slow pace of the dance, anyone can begin with Nia dance. It can even help beginners who have certain difficulties moving and are stiff.
Nia was born in 1983. In an age of “no pain, no gain” and “feel-the-burn” high-impact aerobic fitness, Nia founders Debbie and Carlos Rosas believed there had to be a better way. It was groundbreaking, revolutionary and controversial as one of the very first mind-body fusion fitness practices.
Leaving successful careers in the booming high-impact aerobics industry behind, they embarked on a quest to find an alternative way to move, condition and heal the body that would integrate the body, mind and spirit and, ultimately, revolutionise the face of fitness as we know it.
Committed to its mission and purpose for over 35 years, Nia has bucked the trend of “harder, faster, more” fitness while remaining a “hidden-gem” discovered by those courageous and curious souls who long for something different, deeper, more. You may be reading this now right now because you are one of those courageous and curious individuals. Nia now reaches all over the globe, bringing health, well-being, joy, connection, vitality and holistic fitness to thousands of practitioners.
As mind-body programs become mainstream, Nia continues as a leader in holistic fitness, wellness and lifestyle education, guiding people to become their best selves one dance, one class, one training at a time.
The path of transformation for body, mind, emotion and spirit awaits. You’re invited to step-in.
